Nanda Director (Technical), NMDC Ltd., Hyderabad ABSTRACT The exploitation of high grade iron ore reserves is on the raise to meet the demands of the rapid growing steel industry. Minerals being non renewable assets, call of the hour is judicious utilization of the available resources. The thrust on the iron ore producers is to enhance the productivity from the existing mines by recovering iron units from slimes which are discarded as tailings from the existing iron ore processing plants containing substantial amount of recoverable iron units. Also, to look in to the alternative resources like lean grade iron ores such as Banded Hematite Jasper (BHJ)/ Banded Hematite Quartzite (BHQ) which are available in abundance but not yet utilized for want of suitable process technology.
